In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrators James Braithwaite and Alex Kurina have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short and won the 2009 Emmy for ‘New Approaches’ (making it the first film to win an Emmy on behalf of the internet).

Unless you live in Fargo, there are likely thousands of restaurants in your city, but only a handful where you want to eat.  And the entire city wants to eat at those same restaurants:  Sunda in Chicago, Per Se in nyc, minibar in DC and Osteria Mozza in LA.

If you want to land a money table on a Friday night at eight, you need to know somebody.  And, unless they already know you celebrity, cultivate a relationship with the person who runs the front of the house.  Although, if the restaurant has a Byzantine reservation structure, you may need a backup plan.  One strategy is to frequently dine with a regular.  Think of them as your Trojan horse into a last-minute party of six.

But, investing in becoming a regular is your best bet for obtaining those coveted digits.  Another method is to find out where the staff hangs out after their shift-it will be a bar-and buy them a round.  Although, the success of this method is not guaranteed.

Once you’ve got the number, don’t overuse it.  Limit yourself and remember:  as with any transactional relationship, the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.

There’s a new town punch in Chicago.  And, while everybody should try her at least once, it may not be as easy as its location suggests (just off Logan Square on Kedzie across from the Blue Line).  This high-end gastropub doesn’t take reservations OpenTable meaning wait times can exceed two hours on a Wednesday and it’s wide-ranging beer-and-booze list renders its bar stools some of the most sought after seats in town.

Longman & Eagle has two dining areas, aesthetically bipolar.  The back one looks like a kindergarten collage.  The front room, substantially more popular, has an unpainted plank ceiling, black tables, rusted industrial lamps, exposed pipes, a few plants, and no art except that found on the bodies of the customers, primarily unshaven but chic hipsters.  The staff, similarly painted, is cool and ridiculously hip.  Their service feels personal and if you’re alone, they’ll probably chat with you a bit too.

The chef, Jared Wentworth, formally of Quinn’s in Seattle, has put together a daring menu.  I’ll be the first to admit I was even slightly skeptical.  With a menu that changes frequently, this culinary artist uses fine local ingredients and employs traditional American cooking that will turn your taste buds on.  Longman & Eagle puts their prophet chef best themselves saying his, “farm to table, nose to tail aesthetic is represented lovingly by ever-changing menus that are both adventurous and sublime, featuring items that exemplify his passion for creative, flavorful and honest dishes offered at fair and reasonable prices.”  I sampled their buffalo frog’s legs with aerated blue cheese and some house marinated olives which lasted throughout the night.  Then a burger and wild boar sloppy joe with beef fat fries later and I was speechless.  Two weeks later, I’m writing this.

And, if you’re actually with a town punch, the pioneers behind Longman & Eagle converted the space above into a vibrant six room motel of sorts.  The rooms, each uniquely decorated, offer an urban enclave ideal for seasoned travelers and one-night stands.  I’d gladly spend the night if I found myself in a food coma.

This is what happens when Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg dine at the same restaurant.  Formula One formalities at their best.

Text 6 Apr 29 Palms Inn

Next time I’m in the City of Angels, I’m going to take a little road trip (which I hear is fantastic) to Twentynine Palms, California.  I’ve been told I’m going to flip when I see the stars.

The 29 Palms Inn is built around a natural spring an actual oasis in the middle of the desert.  At the turn of the century (the previous one), people gathered there for water; then, in the 1920s, a group of locals built this very funky, ramshackle inn that still looks like a rustic 1940s movie set.  By the pool, there’s this perfect little restaurant that’s always full of characters.

And if you decide you really like her, it’s only three hours to Vegas.
